Can Danny survive and find his mother at the hospital?
I like this series. The books would definitely be useful in a classroom situation for reluctant readers or to teach/supplement history lessons. The stories are action-packed and interesting. The cover art is definitely eye-communicable.
I listened to the audiobook version of this story. Narrated by Michael Goldstrom, the audio is just over an hour long. Goldstrom reads at a prissy pace with adept inflection. I accept hearing loss but was easily able to hear and understand the audio.
I will definitely be reading more of this series. I like to read children'due south books as a break from developed literature. Sometimes I just like to read for enjoyment and want a short book for a relaxing reading break. This series fit that need perfectly. The books are well-written and interesting just brusk enough to be a quick, easy read.
For adults reading this series, e'er go along in listen that this serial is written for children. The length is shorter, details softened a bit, and the main characters are children. Don't wait in-depth more than adult coverage of these historical events every bit adults are not the target audition for this serial.

Historical fiction is one of the hardest genres to get my students hooked to, but with her books, I can get whatever kid to read it. And the other corking thing is that since these books only give a taste of this his Lauren Tarshis has a really good affair going for her with her I Survived series of books. Fifty-fifty though the characters lack tons of depth and the stories are quite brusque and simple, they are interesting and requite kids a glimpse into major historical events that they might non know much about.
Historical fiction is ane of the hardest genres to get my students hooked to, but with her books, I can get any kid to read it. And then they moved there the islands were bombed and Danny had to find his mom in the hospital. On the style Danny was running on the beach and a Japanese plane came behind him and started shooting at him. Danny made information technology through the plane attack with his mom. After a couple of days in the hospital helping wounded soldiers, they finally got to become home and rest.
I recommend this volume to any middle or high school male child or girl student. I think they volition bask the excitement of the book.

Living in New York City, Danny Crane, 11, and his best friend Finn were always in trouble. Danny's father had skipped out before he was born, and then his female parent worked as a nurse by twenty-four hour period and cleaned offices at dark to support them and was oftentimes non abode. There are just too many kids in Finn's family unit for anyone to keep an eye on him The two boys skip schoolhouse, sneak into the movies, and pretty soon, they were hanging out with gangster Earl Gasky. And then, in late1941, Danny's mother takes a nursing job at the infirmary at Hickam Air Strength base of operations on Oahu, Hawaii. Danny hasn't been living in Hawaii for very long before he hatches a plan to stowaway on a ship bound for San Francisco on December 7th, and from there, he plans to cross the country riding the runway dorsum to Finn and the life he loves and wants.
On the morning time of December 6th, Danny meets his new neighbors when toddler Aki Sudo wanders into the Cranes lawn. The Sudos are a family of Japanese descent that had been born in Hawaii. And Aki Sudo may only have been 3 years former, but he knew every plane the Americans had in their Air Force, thanks to the detailed drawings his fisherman father drew for him.
Danny likes the Sudos, but he is still determined to go back to Finn and NYC. However, on the morning of December 7th, Danny is having a hard fourth dimension getting out of bed and setting his plan in motion. Thinking virtually his female parent and how she volition experience when she discovers him gone, Danny is jolted out of bed by little Aki'south cries. Planes, swarms of them, are coming and they aren't American. All of a sudden, as the 2 boys are heading to the Sudo abode, they hear loud explosions followed by fire and fume. Pearl Harbor is nether attack.
Returning Aki to his mother, Danny decides he needs to get the Hickam, to find his own female parent. Just along the mode, there is another round of bombing, and shooting. So, Danny meets Mack, a lieutenant and pilot of a B-17. Mack likes Mrs. Crane, but Danny was resentful of that. Now, though, with a bullet wound to his arm, he and Danny try to brand their way to Hickam together.
Merely, will the two exist able to survive the pelting of bullets and bombs the Japanese pilots are unleashing on all of Pearl Harbor?
I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor is the 4th volume in this pop, action packed I Survived series for boys about boys living in different fourth dimension periods and facing unlike historical disasters and making them real coming of historic period stories. And, like the others, it won't let the reader down. At that place is plenty of real historical information couched in the fictional story of Danny and since Danny more or less sees the assail on Pearl Harbor from a distance, the descriptions of it are realistic, but non so graphic they will upset the historic period appropriate reader.
One of the side bug that Lauren Tarshis addresses in this particular story is how easy information technology was for boys like Danny to autumn into the wrong kind of life. Danny is at an age when friends can exist all important, then the reader sees how he is torn betwixt staying with his mother and his loyalty to his friend and partner in law-breaking Finn. These two friends were on their way to being in real trouble when Mrs. Crane moved Danny to Hawaii. Juvenile delinquency was a trouble back then because so many parents, like Mrs. Crane, had to piece of work long hours, often at two jobs. Doing little things for someone like Earl Gasky was just the beginning. Both boys are at an age when they could have gone either way and I wondered what happened to Finn, left in NYC.
Since I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor is a work of historical fiction, the author has included lots of back matter for further exploration. There is a lengthy Q&A virtually the actual attack, a Pearl Harbor Time Line, Pearl Harbor facts and resource for reading other books about kids caught in the bombing of December vii, 1941.
In addition, the publisher of the I Survived series, Scholastic, has put a Teacher's Guide online that is uniform with Mutual Core State Standards and it tin be downloaded Hither
This book is recommended for readers historic period 7+

There are a couple of characters in the volume. The principal character is Danny. He is eleven and is a problem maker. At that place is his other friend Finn, who he left in the hospital. At that place is Earl and his gang, who Danny and Finn hung out with in New York. Aki is the lilliputian boy who was Danny's new friend in Hawaii. Mrs. Sudo is the mother of Aki and tries to keep them both safe. There is Danny's mother who works at the hospital. She takes care of Danny and makes sure he is safe.
The setting of this book is in summer fourth dimension. It is very hot out and school is near to start. The place of this book takes identify in Hawaii nearly Pearl Harbor.
I recollect the author is trying to say that things change. We as people have to deal with the change of going somewhere new and meeting new people. Things will never exist the aforementioned after a period of time.
I would recommend this book to any kids and adults. Information technology is an like shooting fish in a barrel and fun book to read. Information technology does not go into much depth on the history, but information technology gives y'all fiddling detail nigh what happened. At that place are parts of information technology where it is funny and and then heart pounding and thrilling.

I was a Eye Schoolhouse Reading, History, and English teacher for almost 30 years! How did I non know nigh this series?Another reviewer, Phillip, recommended one of the books in the series, and I decided to get them all from my library!
I really enjoyed it! I love learning new things and Ms. Tarshis writes almost the past so vividly, it is like she was really there; you become the feeling that she is telling yous about personal events!
I can fully empathize why students would savor reading her books! I would certainly include them in any History or Reading class studying the period being discussed!
This story centers around Danny, who has recently moved to Pearl City, Hawaii. His Mother is a nurse; she wanted, to go Danny abroad from a few spots of trouble, he had been getting into. And then, but a few weeks after they arrive, the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor.
This story is exciting and suspenseful. I particularly similar how Danny's friendship with little Aki makes him become aware of the tenuous existence for Japanese Americans living in Hawaii and other parts of the U.s.a..
This story gave me lots to retrieve virtually! If I was even so a teacher I would focus on this information for discussion and/or a writing exercise.

I was lucky plenty to visit this memorial. The drops of oil made me think of the tears that are still shed over the lives lost in the Pearl Harbor assault and the sorrows of the long war that followed."
I am off to read another volume in the series!

Personally, I didn't dislike this book but I didn't similar information technology very much either. I felt that it was as well short and somewhat rushed but information technology also had a somewhat decent story behind it. Overall, information technology wasn't a terrible book; nevertheless, I experience there are some areas it could improve on, such as characters and depth of the story itself.
Plot:
I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor by Lauren Tarshis is most a young boy named Danny who moved from the streets of New York City to Hawaii with his mother. Danny is not happy about moving considering he is leaving his best friend Finn behind as well as everything else he loves about New York City. The outset few weeks were rough for Danny because he missed his all-time friend and he didn't know anyone in Hawaii. His mother was working at a hospital as a nurse in this new city as she helped out at the military base stationed in Hawaii. Ane day Danny met a young Japanese boy by the name of Aki. Aki brought Danny to his business firm where he met his mother and male parent. Over the next couple weeks, Danny and Aki became good friends and they were able to spend the mean solar day together all the time. All the same, everything inverse i day, when Danny looked up in the sky and saw hundreds of planes flying towards Pearl Harbor. He thought information technology was just a armed services exercise until the planes started dropping bombs. In that moment Danny knew they were nether attack, but he had no idea who information technology was. Danny then remembered his female parent was at the hospital and the planes were flying in that direction. He started running downward the route to effort and make it to the hospital. All effectually him it was a frenzy and everyone was panicking. Danny was eventually able to get in to the infirmary where he met up with his female parent. Later the planes had stopped attacking, there were hundreds of men wounded that needed attention. Danny and his female parent, as well every bit all the other nurses and volunteers, worked endlessly to help as many soldiers as they could. It was took 2 long days in that hospital of helping the men, but they finally finished. The next couple weeks were rough, as America had declared war on Japan and Danny would never be the same afterward the experiences he went through that twenty-four hour period.
Characterization:
The book is told in 3rd person, mostly through the main character Danny. As a young male child, Danny had experienced a lot throughout the book and all of his experiences had changed him. At the beginning of the book, Danny only wanted to go back to New York and be with his best friend, merely later living through the bombing of Pearl Harbor, it had impacted his behavior and his train of thought. He decided he didn't want to exit Hawaii anymore and he would stay and exist there for his mother instead of abandoning her to go back to New York.
Danny's female parent wanted to leave New York and start a new life in Hawaii with her son. She idea that moving here he would be away from any trouble and it would be a better life for him. After the bombing happened, she thought she made a terrible fault and that moving at that place wasn't the best thought; however, Danny had reassured her that it was going to be okay, and he was happy to have moved to Hawaii despite what had happened.
Setting:
The setting of the book takes place in Pearl Metropolis, Hawaii during WWII in the 1940's. The setting is important because Danny's life wouldn't have been impacted the way it was if he hadn't been in Hawaii during the attacks. The fourth dimension period is significant because it was during the 2nd Earth State of war and that was when the Japanese had attacked the United states of america.
Thematic Connection:
The main theme throughout this book is bravery. Danny had to be extremely brave when he ran into the city that was being bombed but to find his female parent. He was being shot at past planes and witnessed men die, something that most kids, and people, accept never experienced. Even afterwards everything Danny went through, he nevertheless was brave enough to find his mother and help her.
Recommendation:
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading near WWII history. This book doesn't get much in depth of the attacks, but information technology gives a good summary of what happened that fateful day. I would recommend information technology to immature adults who take an interest about Pearl Harbor and other aspects of WWII.

I have now read five I Survived books. They all follow a anticipated format with the main protagonist becoming stuck in the middle of a natural disaster or historic consequence, but we all know he/she volition survive. Equally I write this review, I only realized the protagonists have all been boys, and it would be nice if Tarshis featured a girl for some of these. I likewise usually wish the books went into a little more depth, just I retrieve she did a meliorate job focusing on the consequence with this volume.I actually appreciated the illustrations with this one. There was a full page illustration of the planes such as the B-17 bomber. I am non an aviation expert, so I liked getting to run into these planes in such detail. At the cease, Tarshis also included a timeline of Pearl Harbor with fourth dimension stamps similar to the 9/xi book. This is a helpful reference for kids. She also answers several questions kids may have such every bit why the Japanese attacked. She sets the stage by giving a good amount of groundwork information. She too gives lite to how Japanese Americans were treated and adds, "The federal government officially apologized in 1983." Finally she discusses Pearl Harbor today with the memorial. "The memorial is built over the sunken battleship [Arizona], which rests in twoscore anxiety of water at the bottom of the harbor. The send nonetheless leaks drops of oil that rise to the surface of the h2o. ...The drops of oil made me call back of the tears that are notwithstanding shed over the lives lost in the Pearl Harbor attack, and the sorrows of the war that followed." Information technology's hard to fathom i,177 people were killed on the Arizona when over one million pounds of gunpowder exploded.
Overall, I think Tarshis did a prissy job bringing this event to life and honoring the lives lost with her afterword and additional notes. I learned facts I didn't know such every bit there were several red flags earlier the assault and mistakes were made past not bringing attending to these. Sadly, this could accept been avoided. Hopefully, nosotros have learned from history. With the I Survived series, Tarshis shows kids the importance of history, and I would recommend this to young readers.

Obviously, since this is a very curt volume meant for a younger audition it lacks many important elements such as graphic symbol evolution which makes the volume harder to relate to and savor. Even so is a unproblematic book that could be expert for young people to gain a cursory perspective and understanding of a few of the events that took place during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
